From Booklist Everybody hates doing drywall--that's why it's so expensive having it done for you. Staunch (penurious) do-it-yourselfers (and industrious types seeking a new career path) should consult Ferguson's generously illustrated, cheerfully detailed guide. It discloses the secrets of hanging drywall evenly without throwing your back out and the arcane rules of good taping and joint-compound techniques. It airs the strategy of "prebowing" drywall panels, concerns about the "grain orientation" of drywall sheets, and the perhaps more obvious issues of fastening with screws rather than with nails and vice versa. One grows to admire the depth of Ferguson's gypsum-board mastery, for the matters cited seem trifling only to those who have never personally attacked a drywall project. Those who have, or will, will appreciate the clear directions and insightful tips. From choice of trowel to methods of properly mixing powdered joint compounds, Ferguson has it covered. Happy hanging. Mike Tribby

Reviews:

Very necessary if you're a beginner drywaller. I had never even watched any drywalling before I plunged headlong into remodeling a room in my home. I read through this book, went by Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, and ended up with a job that I am quite proud of. My only regret is that I chose not to texture. I painted the finished walls with a semi-gloss paint, and if the light is right, you can see some of my sanding marks. This year I removed a door and patched the hole with drywall. His instructions were invaluable, and yes, I textured this time. It looks great. Thank you Mr. Ferguson!

Outstanding! This was my first time drywalling. Mr Ferguson's book was invaluabe to me having a sucessful project. After having water damage from a broken pipe to my finished basement, I got estimates from contractors... Determined not to pay those rates I forged ahead on my own completing the project for a fraction of the estimates. With Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, I ended up with a job that has professional quality. Ferguson gives you everything you need from the choice of proper tools to using screws over nails to how to make repairs. Simply Outstanding! Thanks Mr. Ferguson!

clear, concise, and applicable: Many home improvement books go off on tangents, and offer instruction that hardly seems applicable to the job at hand. This book doesn't waste a lot of time on telling you to wear eye protection, call a licensed contractor (like some contractor is going to come out to advise you on how to do his job), get a permit, etc. Instead it gives you the right instructions to let you do the job right yourself. It assumes some basic knowledge and ability on the part of the reader, but it walks you through virtually every conceivable situation you may face and shows you how to do the job right. Be advised though that hanging and finishing drywall is as much an art as a science, so it takes practice. You will however be able to become proficient if you start with small jobs and graduate as you build skill, if you carefully follow this book.

If you are not a professional drywaller, read this book! I bought this book after learning to drywall the hard way -- trial and error. Mr. Ferguson distills the most important facts about *efficient* drywall techniques. A quick read. In my last project I saved a lot of time and learned some new "tricks."
