Solar photovoltaic (PV) cells are instruments that convert sunlight -- the most abundant energy source on Earth -- directly into electricity. Large photovoltaic systems can be integrated into buildings to produce electricity for use in the building as well as for export to the local grid. Photovoltaic equipment has no moving parts; hence, it requires very little maintenance. It generates electricity without producing emissions (e.g. greenhouse or any other gases), and its operates silently.
Photovoltaic systems can be incorporated into buildings in many ways. South-facing rooftops are an ideal site, where PV modules can simply be mounted using frames. Photovoltaic systems can also be incorporated into the actual building frame, also.: An example of this is the use of PV roof tiles, now available, which can be fitted like standard tiles. Further, PVs can also be incorporated as building facades, canopies and skylights.
Although the technology has proven itself technically, and is environmentally friendly, it is still expensive. To that end several the Government offers incentives (such as tax breaks and deductions) which can help with the costs of installation systems.
